Ovogénesis
Es el proceso de formación y maduración del óvulo La ovogénesis se lleva a cabo en la corteza ovárica.
La mujer al nacer tiene, aproximadamente, 400,000 folículos primordiales, de los cuales, en la etapa fértil, sólo se llegan a desarrollar 400.
En la corteza del ovario se hallan folículos en diferentes grados de desarrollo, dentro de los cuales se encuentra el ovocito.

Las ovogonias se forman a partir de las células germinales primordiales (CGP). Se originan en el epiblasto
a partir de la segunda semana y migran por el intestino primitivo a la zona gonadal indiferenciada alrededor de la quinta semana de gestación. Una vez en el ovario, experimentan mitosis hasta la vigésima semana, momento en el cual el número de ovogonias ha alcanzado un máximo de 7 millones esta cifra se reduce a 40 000 y solo 400 serán ovuladas a partir de la pubertad hasta la menopausia alrededor de los 50 años. Desde la semana octava, hasta los 6 meses después del nacimiento, las ovogonias se diferencian en ovocitos primarios que entran en la profase de la meiosis y comienza a formarse el folículo, inicialmente llamado folículo primordial. El proceso de meiosis queda detenido en la profase por medio de hormonas inhibidoras hasta la maduración sexual.

La espermatogénesis es el aumento o crecimiento, maduración, transformación y la liberación del empaquetamiento del ADN de los espermatozoides en la pubertad. También es el mecanismo encargado de la producción de espermatozoides; es la gametogenesis en el hombre. Este proceso se produce en las gonadas, activado por la hormona GnRH que se produce en el hipotálamo, y la maduración final de los espermatozoides se produce en el epididimo. La espermatogénesis tiene una duración aproximada de 62 a 75 días en la especie humana, y consta de tres fases o etapas: mitosis o meiosis y espermatogénesis
Inicia en la adolescencia y se lleva a cabo en los túbulos seminíferos. Las células en los túbulos seminíferos se disponen alrededor del lúmen, las espermatogonias se encuentran en la base del epitelio y proliferan por mitosis. Existen dos tipos de espermatogonias las tipo A y B. Las espermatogonias tipo A se encargan de dividirse y dan origen a espermatogonias tipo B que son las que van a diferenciarse en espermatozoides.
Las descendientes de las espermatogonias tipo B son las que entran a la primera diversión meiótica duplicando su material genético y son los espermatocitos primarios siendo su material genético 2n4c.
